SEO and Website Designers

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

As the internet has become increasingly sophisticated, the various professional fields in the internet marketplace have become more and more specialized. In each area there have been massive leaps in complexity, usability, design and technology.

Even just a few years back, there were relatively few separate specialties for people who work within the arena of the internet. These days there is a vast multitude of ways in which people can specialize online. These professionals include:

Web designers,Information architects,Google Adwords campaign managers, various types of program and software developers and last but not least, Search Engine Optimisation.

In my experience, most web designers these days don’t even know how to include Search engine Optimization in the sites that they design and build. There is ample proof of this; it is visible easily every day by just taking a look at what is out there. Websites that have either no or empty Meta tags no headline tags and in some cases no title tags! The most frustrating part of this is that all of these measures are very easy to include.

So where does that leave the buyer? It leaves them with a website that will no doubt look fantastic; however the chances are that few will ever see it. Let alone become customers of whatever service or product the site is offering. This seems to be particularly true in the case of websites that contain a lot of flash, it looks great, but it is heavy in the browser and as it is purely images, the search engines cannot read it, even if there are words as the words themselves are rendered as images not text.

Therefore, when shopping for a website designer, be aware that though most will have the words ‘SEO’ or ‘Search engine Optimization‘ somewhere within their marketing or sales material. Many don’t have any idea what it means, so take the precaution of checking. The way to check it out is to look at sites they have already completed – particularly their own. Check to see if it has Meta tags such as the keyword and description meta tag, check to see if their title tags actually have something useful in them not just ‘welcome to company XYZ website’.

These things are simple for anybody to check out. The title tag is easily visible to you as you open the site in your browser, you will see it on the very top of your screen. To double check the other items you will need to view the source code, you can do this in Firefox by clicking on ‘View’ then on ‘Page Source’. This will show you all the code of the site, the meta tags should be near the top just after the the title tags.

Finally, check out the code to see if headline tags have been used. Between these tags you should see the main headline of the page, this should include the keywords that you want people to find your website with.

Example of First Page Results

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The financial gain from a position in the top 5 search results for a major keyword can be very substantial, one example is a keyword that went from the bottom of the second page to the 4th position on Google.

A client’s website had a ranking of 18 for their primary target keywords on the second page of Google’s natural search engine results. Considering how many marketers are competing for the top positions for this keyword, appearing on the second page of search results seemed a like an accomplishment, but we thought that it could be better.

SEO Works

A marketing strategy focused optimization efforts on improving the natural keyword ranking for this one target keyword. Eventually, the ranking for the keyword first moved to the number 9 position, and then to the number 4 position of the first page search engine results. The improved search engine ranking for this single keyword generated an increase in sales leads far more than expected, which subsequently converted to an increase in sales revenue amounting to over $1,000,000.

Tracking the Moves

The list below shows the search engine ranking relative to the number of sales leads that were generated from the company’s primary target keyword:

  • Nov 08 – position 18 = 6 leads
  • Dec 08 – position 9 = 31 leads
  • Jan 09 – position 9 = 126 leads
  • Feb 09 – position 4 = 102 leads
  • Mar 09 – position 4 = 207 leads
  • Apr 09 – position 4= 221 leads

Summary of Results

The increase in the number of monthly sales leads can be seen as the target keyword ranking moved up over the six month time period. The full benefit of the keyword moving from the 18th to the 9th position is reflected in the January total because the change occurred later in the month of December. The same applies to the move from position 9 to position 4 because the change occurred later in February.

For marketing managers and business owners who are wondering about the difference between having a major keyword listing on the first page of search results compared to the second page of results, this case study should provide some insight based on our experience.

It also shows an example of the potential benefit from having keyword search results listed above the fold of a web page as opposed to below the fold where viewers must scroll down to see more search listings.

There was clear evidence that a higher organic search engine ranking can dramatically affect sales lead generation and company revenue, in this case over ,000,000.

Ranking No.1 in MSN in just 7 days - Guaranteed!

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

This article is all about how I ranked no.1 in MSN in just 7days and how can you do this!

A Good keyword research - I performed a very good keyword research using Google and Overture's Inventory tool. If you want to rank high you need to perform a good keyword research because if you are targeting a very competitive keyword and your site is new then you have no chance. Keyword research is what that will bring you targeted traffic so try to perform a good keyword research it’s useless to compete for highly competitive keywords just to get high amount of traffic. Don’t bother about the traffic they generate just target less competitive keywords and phrases where you have some chance to win the race. Remember slow and steady wins the race.

Keyword Density and Utilization - MSN gives a great importance to the keyword density of your page and also to the keyword density in the first 1000 characters used in your web page. Its better to use a density of 4-5%. This why I used my most important keywords at the top of each page which really supports my rankings in MSN. But always remember that stuffing will not give you rankings just be descriptive and focused to your content and you will rank according to what you deserve.

Keywords in Title: Title once again, now everyone of you would be knowing that Title is one of the most important ones so, it is strongly recommended that you use your important keywords in the Title tag first and keep the density in the title between 30-40% and always remember to be descriptive rather than filling it with keywords because natural is what that is favored by the search engines.

Keywords Used In Incoming Links To Your Site - Keywords used in incoming links to your site is the most important factor for your ranking. Use the same keywords in your links text that you use in Title, this is what which have boosted my rankings up the order if I remove the keywords from the incoming links then my rankings may drop again. So, the best thing to do when building links is that use your important keywords in the tag rather than using your company name.

It Is So Essential To Get Backlinks To Your Blog

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

As a webmaster, you have probably heard about search engine optimization. Probably you have already applied several SEO techniques to promote your website. Backlinks are some of the main building blocks to good SEO. A backlink is an incoming link to your website received from another web page, site or directory. Let’s suppose that your website is about blogging. When another website from the same niche directs a backlink towards your website, you gain recognition and authority. This means that Internet users will find your website much easier when they search for a specific term or word on the web.

Search engines use the number of backlinks received by a website to determine its reputation on the web (page rank). Not all links are equally important; some may even harm your website! For example, if a website was penalized by Google for promoting illegal or immoral content and that website links to your website or vice versa, your website will be become less popular, being ignored by search engines.

It doesn’t make sense to receive backlinks from web pages that link back to a large number of different websites. You should rather try to get backlinks from websites with PR 0 or no PR, because their popularity might increase over time. Besides this, every link directed towards your website matters, because it represents a favorable vote from Google. To evaluate the quality of a backlink, you should consider its popularity, Page Rank and authority.

How to get backlinks to your website? Well, there are several ways to do it. It’s highly recommended to opt for web pages and directories that link back to your website without asking you to do the same. When launching a new website, most webmasters join free web directories, which is good for increasing the website visibility on the Internet. Another way to promote your site consists in publishing your articles and posts in article directories. People, like search engine spiders, can read the article and then visit your website.

Getting backlinks from reputable websites with a high Page Rank is the most effective way to promote your website in search engines. A high Page Rank can be achieved by increasing the number of backlinks to your page. The more backlinks your page has, the higher your PR will be.

The most important is to provide quality content. No one will visit your website if there’s nothing interesting to read about. Even if you sell something, you must do it in a unique way. Don’t try to fool your visitors and don’t underestimate them. Offer unique and accurate information to gain their loyalty. Get involved in discussions and post on forums. Don’t forget about social networks, which are a powerful marketing tool.

Use relevant keywords and focus on the anchor text and webpage content congruency, because this is what your visitors will see. For example, if you write about weight loss, use the word “weight loss” not only in your articles, but also in the website URLs and titles. This is the best way to increase your website visibility.
