As we can see from the current slump in the economy, with all the layoffs, there is really no “secure” job. Personally, I haven’t really had any other jobs than temporary ones. And this in spite of having a Ph.D.

You see, in the academic world most positions are temporary and it is not until you become a Professor that you get a bit of job security. I never reached as far as to those pinnacles of achievment. Once upon a time I got a fellowship and spent two years at Harvard (one of the top U.S. universities); but that was it for me.

Even back then I was actually fed up with Academia, and secretly dreamed of being in my own business. I remember thinking about going for a degree in something like Business Administration — but felt very bored by that thought.

Let’s face it — if you have spent many precious years of your life getting a higher education, then the thought of going back to school again is, well, more like a nightmare. Actually, I used to have a recurring nightmare where I was back in High School and had to go through all those motions a second time! Not too pleasant, I’ll tell you. More like in the movie “Groundhog Day”, where the same day seems to repeat itself endlessly.

OK, I did at least manage to get out of Academia and get myself a job — in a small fledgling Biotech company. For once I liked my bosses — now things began to look quite promising. Unfortunately this came crashing down a year later. The company I worked for went belly up — leaving me without a job.

My ex-bosses were nice people but they didn’t know how to run a company. They had spent money recklessly on fancy offices and such, oblivious to any warnings.

What to do now? Well, I was frantically trying to find some business opportunity, something to get me going fast. No room for anything else, for a number of reasons. Now I wanted a work from home business. I hated having to spend my time at some office, ruled by the whims of others.

Fortunately, I had a bit of knowledge about the Internet and I knew how to build web sites. Also I realized you could make money selling stuff online.

I happened to stumble on some ebook on the subject of making a good living as affiliate; ie. by marketing other people’s stuff. If I recall it correctly the ebook in question was by Rosalyn Gardner — I wouldn’t recommend it nowadays since I think it is now outdated. Nevertheless, it was useful back then.

Using that information I was soon able to make some decent money as affiliate for web hosting companies. Finally, I was able to work from home online and set my own hours. This is my idea of freedom!
