Just What is a Dedicated Server?

In the web hosting industry, a dedicated server is usually defined as the rental and exclusive use of a computer that includes a web server, related software, and connection to the Internet, located on-site, within a web hosting company’s premises.

In most cases, for compilation of related company web sites, that may develop a considerable amount of traffic, a dedicated server is usually needed. In many cases, the server may be configured and operated on a remote basis, independently located from the client company.

A single computer on a web hosting network that is leased or rented, and dedicated to just one customer, comprises a dedicated server. A service provider will monitor the computer’s hardware, network connectivity, and routing equipment, while the customer generally controls and maintains the server software.

Dedicated servers are usually used for web sites that have grown beyond the basic standard web hosting account, and require a more comprehensive network. They are also used by larger companies that need separate systems for mail, web, and database servers.

Web hosting companies may have their sites spread over one or several servers. Dedicated servers are generally kept inside of data centers, so that they may be monitored by service providers.

Shared Web Hosting and Dedicated Server Hosting Compared

by Ben Ingham

A dedicated hosting managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting where the client rents an entire server not shared with other websites.

Normally a large range of hardware is available typically based around Intel cpu’s Athlon cpu’s. Dual, single, and quad cpu servers can be usually be rented.

This is more flexible than budget shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server, including the type of server operating system (typically linux based or Windows). Normally you can get a wide range of hardware, including server memory, disk drive and cpu.

Server administration is usually provided by the hosting company as an add-on service. In many cases a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment.

Dedicated servers are most often located in large data centers, in major cities where there are large concentrations of power and where there are large network providers hubs. Most dedicated server hosting providers rent facilities or a cage at the data centre

The advantage of a server housed in a large data centre is the provision of backup power supplies and HVAC. In contrast to colocation, the server hardware is owned by the provider and in some cases they will provide support for your operating system or applications.
